This unique visual guide that lets you see how wet you'll get on Splash Mountain® (p. 166), what the crowd conditions are at different times of day in Fantasyland® (p. 34), and how the parks are decked out for various holidays (p. 280). Hundreds of fun full-color photos make this book a perfect keepsake, as well as an incredibly useful on-the-ground resource. The Color Companion provides reviews of all the Walt Disney World® resorts, including pictures of the guest rooms, swimming pools, and resort themes. Check out The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World®, the bestselling independent guide to Walt Disney World® and the perfect companion to this full-color guide. The Unofficial Guide Guerrilla Research Tactics Amazon-exclusive content from the authors What makes The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World so “unofficial”? There’s madness to the methodology – the detailed research that goes into the Unofficial Guides is just as quirky as the guides themselves. • We’ve slept in every Disney resort multiple times and more than 80 Orlando-area properties. Only once did we wake up covered in bugs. (It was an off-site hotel.) • We test hotel room soundproofing using a sophisticated digital sound meter and a copy of The Who’s Greatest Hits. • The first time we did Orlando spa reviews, one of our researchers had an eyebrow burned off during a waxing that went horribly awry. • We once logged more than 700 miles in one week on buses to test Disney’s transportation system, and never left Disney property. The bus drivers got so used to us being on board that one forgot we were there and took us back to the station when his shift ended. • We also test pillow fluffiness using a measurement process we invented. We were going to use a fake human head as part of the test, but worried about getting it through airport security. We settled on a gallon jug of water, which is about the same size and weight as an average adult’s noggin. • We’ve dined at every sit-down restaurant multiple times. When we test counter-service restaurants, we order at least one of everything on the menu, and break up in to small teams to sample each thing. I think we’ve tried every counter-service food item in every Disney theme park. • Our crowd prediction models take in to account everything from the day of week and time of year, to the vacation schedules of the fifty largest school districts east of the Mississippi, to weather phenomena including temperature, rainfall and humidity. • A few dozen hearty readers per year participate in something called The Ultimate Magic Kingdom Touring Plan, which is a computer-optimized guide to seeing every ride, show, live performance, parade and fireworks in the Magic Kingdom (between 50 and 60 separate attractions, depending on refurbishments) in a single day. The current record is 55 attractions in 11 hours, 38 minutes. The average wait in line per attraction is less than 2 minutes. Despite sounding more like an endurance race than a vacation, families love it. A few have sent photo albums chronicling their day. The Staff Data is analyzed by a professional statistician, who helps us build models of park wait times. The person who helps us figure out the best Disney deals is a PhD economist at their day job. The person who explains key points in theme park architecture for us is a professional urban designer with experience on a number of Disney projects. Our advice for children comes from a nationally-recognized child psychologist. Len wrote his Masters thesis on how computer programs could create efficient touring plans for theme parks. He was awarded a U.S. patent for this research, which was also published in academic journals.

Great guide, but it doesn't really stand alone July 11, 2010 Alison D 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'm going to be perfectly clear here: I love this guidebook. It's certainly informative and gives you a great overview of the Resort and the color photos are beautiful, humorous, and really add to the book. It's easy to read and provides the same quality of the regular Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World, but without being 800 pages long. Most of all, I love the humor that you find in many of the sections. From the humorous captions to pictures, to the satirical take on the Fantasyland expansion, to the fake hotel listings (which, yes, I understand could be somewhat confusing for some, but personally I thought they were great), the humor gives the guide a satirical edge that doesn't overpower the content, but makes the guide enjoyable to read, not just to gather information from. It's satirical but not cynical, and informative but not dry.
However, it is not a fully comprehensive guidebook. It wasn't meant to be; it's a companion to the regular Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World. I knew that when I bought the book (I already owned the regular Unofficial Guide), and I brought both Guides with me on my recent trip to Walt Disney World. While the Color Companion was great to carry around in the parks and use for reference, the regular Guide was often referred to throughout the trip. For example, when we wanted to book a behind-the-scenes tour, or when I wanted to know more about Downtown Disney shopping. The regular Guide is also much more detailed when it comes to planning factors before you leave (for instance, what kind of tickets to purchase). If you know going in that the Color Companion is going to be helpful and informative but not comprehensive, then I don't think you'll be disappointed. But if you're going to try and rely on just this book to plan your vacation, you're probably going to be disappointed. And yeah, it's true that you can skip buying this and just get the Unofficial Guide by itself and have all the information you'll need. But personally, I think the portability, great pictures, humor, and unique light-hearted yet informative tone make this Companion a must-buy.
Comprehensive overview of Walt Disney World. April 26, 2010 B. Colonna (Somewhere in NJ) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is an excellent guide book for someone wanting to plan a trip to Disney World. While I would suggest using several sources, including the internet to collect information and plan a great trip, this book covers a lot of the info you'll need. The book does not walk you step by step through planning and taking the trip, but it does provide much needed information to help make you enjoy your trip.
It begins with a history of Walt Disney World and gives the reader a background on the park, followed by a brief summary of each theme park in WDW.
The book then proceeds to outline the Walt Disney World experience, broken out into eleven parts, Practical Stuff, Resorts, Walt Disney World With Kids, Dining, the four theme parks, the water parks, Downtown Disney/Boardwalk, and Recreation.
Each part provides great details, such as resort strengths and weaknesses, ratings from surveys, park hours, tips, and photos.
The photos, while numerous, are mostly tiny and many are repetitive (several photos of park strollers, for example).
Dining locations are covered in good detail, with descriptions, costs, fare, and survey ratings.
The "appeal by age" ratings by age group for various attractions is a nice feature, along with other ride info like duration, when to arrive, etc.
The last time I visited WDW I used my knowledge from prior visits and a really good internet site to help plan. But next time around I plan to use this book as well. It is really helpful.
Great book with helpful tips! July 8, 2010 SLJ (NJ USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Heading to see your favorite Mouse or Princess? This book will help you along with some great tips that just might save your vacation! I enjoyed the tips such as stroller rentals and where to find the characters! Yep, INSIDER information! I didn't have to dig around or waste hours walking around the park. I was able to walk in and begin our day right there! It was very helpful and I do recommend it to others!
Wonderful Book for Disney World Adventurers May 3, 2010 Darena Dorsey (The South, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love Walt Disney World but it can be a little overwhelming to visit and the long lines in the hot heat can be enough to discourage another visit but Walt Disney Color Companion can help with advice on how to enjoy your visit more and ways to avoid the long lines. The Color Companion to the Unofficial Guide to Disney is a great book. I love it. It contains 560 full-color photos, helpful hints, detailed information on all the resorts, theme-parks, restaurants, and more. The Color Companion is meant to supplement the Disney Unofficial Guide but the Color Companion book itself is great and can be used alone. The book contains general park information, recommendations and advice plus details on each park, resorts, and restaurants, ticket information, maps, and more. There are ratings for the restaurants and resorts also to help you decide where to eat and stay.
I can't wait to visit Disney soon and this book is so exciting, it provides a little taste now. Love the bright, colorful photos.
Highly recommend and can't wait to get the Disney Unofficial Guide.
Improves upon an already great original May 7, 2010 a 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have occasionally purchased updated copies of the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World at various times since the late 1980s. I always appreciated the honesty, wit, and age-specific rating system that the book has always employed. The only drawback was the total lack of pictures. In my 1999 guide, I remember chuckling at a handful of crude cartoons, humorously depicting the pitfalls of a typical WDW vacation. This new full-color photographic guide improves leaps and bounds over the already terrific original with wonderful images to match the text.
I was very impressed by the quality of these photographes, including a number shot inside the attractions as opposed to stills of the various exteriors. Some appeared to be Disney publicity images, but many--I am certain--are exclusive to this book. The text remains largely the same with the various necessary updates, making this, in many ways, the "perfect" package for Disney vacation planning. I would recommend this to theme park fans even if they are not actively contemplating a trip to Florida. It's fun as a cover-to-cover read, with hundreds of great photos to admire along the way. Recommended as one of the very best guides out there!
